Sri Lanka Association of Buddhist Studies (SLABS)

We are the organization of the academic and professional body of Sri Lankan Buddhist scholars

About Us

Sri Lanka Association of Buddhist Studies (SLABS) was initiated in 2003 by a group of Buddhist academics and scholars from the Sri Lankan university system and other centers of advanced Buddhist studies. They gathered at the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (PGIPBS) in Narahenpita, Colombo, following an invitation extended by Dr. Asanga Tilakaratne who held the position of senior lecturer at PGIPBS and was also the head of the Department of Buddhist Thought.

The primary objective of the association is to function as the academic and professional body of Buddhist scholars within the country while opening up memberships to Buddhist academics worldwide who are willing to be associated with Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka.

Ever since its beginning, SLABS has been serving the field of Buddhist Studies, particularly in Sri Lanka by bringing the Buddhist academics and scholars in the country and outside together in academic activities such as holding national and international seminars and conferences, conducting discussions on academic and scholarly matters and publishing academic work.
